Develop a personal principality and compete for control of Catan in Rivals for CATAN Deluxe. Designed specifically for two players, this complete card game begins with two settlements connected by a road. Players expand outward with regions, roads and cities while producing resources, constructing buildings, launching ships and recruiting heroes.
The introductory game teaches the central resource and development system in around half an hour. Three included theme sets then add distinct strategic directions. The Era of Gold intensifies trade and the value of gold, The Era of Turmoil introduces a more confrontational contest with disruptive characters, and The Era of Progress rewards universities and technological development.
After learning the individual themes, players can combine selected cards in the Duel of the Princes for a broader and more demanding contest. Dice determine production and events, but the expanding card layout gives each rival substantial control over how resources are invested. This Deluxe edition adds four card trays that organise the growing principalities and nine promotional cards for more variety.
